I think I intimidate people?

I think I unintentionally intimidate people that I meet at my college. (especially guys) Everyone thinks that I am rich, and stuck-up, (Which I'm not) because I dress nicely and have a nice car and possessions. I try to be as kind as I can to people, but it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference. I am a shy person in general, and I am currently friendless. How can I make friends and learn to approach people without having a heart-attack?
