Heat mat in vivarium?

I have a exo terra 30X30X30 terrarium, and a 8 watt heat mat, It was stuck on under the tank but it is loosing to Much heat and not getting the viv hot enough, Could i put it inside the viv and put the aspen over top? It is only 8 watts and it will be used for a baby grey rat snake
